September always feels like a turning point. The days are still warm (if we’re lucky!) but the evenings are darker, and you can sense autumn creeping in. For us in the shop, it’s a month filled with the very best of both worlds: the last of the summer showstoppers as the cosy autumn colours get settled in.
Here are a few favourites that made September in the Borders so special:

Sunflowers
Nothing says late summer quite like a sunflower. Cheerful, bold, and a favourite for gifts, they’ve been brightening up kitchens and tables everywhere.
Hydrangeas
September is when hydrangeas start turning those lovely antique shades – dusky pinks, purples, and greens. They’re brilliant for longer-lasting arrangements.
Dahlias
September is peak dahlia season and they never fail to impress. From perfect pom-poms to wild café au lait blooms, they’ve been the star of many bouquets this month. I’m lucky enough to have a polytunnel next to my house and it’s jam packed full of dahlias of all shapes, colours and varieties.
Berries & Seed Heads
As the hedgerows change, we start bringing in berries, seed heads, and textural grasses. They add depth and that “autumn is coming” feel to bouquets. This is definitely my favourite addition to seasonal bouquets at this time of year.

A Busy Month in the Shop
September is also when wedding season starts to wind down, and we’ve loved creating everything from bridal bouquets to big installations. It’s always a bittersweet month – saying goodbye to summer weddings but getting excited for cosy autumn projects.
We’ve also been busy prepping for the months ahead: autumnal workshops, Christmas planning (yes, florists have to start early!), and plenty of fresh deliveries to keep the shop filled with colour.

🌿 Flower Care Tip of the Month
Dahlias are beautiful but they can be a bit fussy. And realistically they don’t last a long time as a cut flower. Expect 5 days from them if looked after.
If you got a bunch from us in September, the trick is:
Always cut the stems at an angle
Use fresh, cool water
Keep them away from fruit bowls (the ethylene gas shortens their vase life).

Looking Ahead
As we move into October, expect more rich colours, textural foliage, and seasonal favourites. Keep an eye out for pumpkins, berries, and the very first whispers of Christmas!
Look out for our Christmas wreath workshop dates.
