Well, here it is - my very first blog post on my lovely, shiny new website! And I thought introducing myself was best way to start!
I've been a florist for 25 years now (eek). Floristry hasn't always been my main work that's paid the bills but no matter what I've always found myself returning to floristry time and time again.
I've always had a thing for flowers. There's just something about them that brightens up any space, no matter how dull or dreary. Their scent, their beauty, their colours never fail to bring happiness. But after years of working with imported flowers, I started to feel like something was missing. The imported flowers are developed for their longevity at the mercy of their scent and their rigid sameness just didn't do anything for me anymore. That's why I decided to take matters into my own hands and start growing my own.
Based in the lovely village of Lilliesleaf near Melrose, right in the heart of the Scottish Borders, I've set up my growing patch and workshop. From here, I grow a variety of flowers that are perfectly suited to our Scottish climate. Roses, antirrhinums, tulips, you name it - if it grows well here, chances are, I've got it in my garden.
I won't lie to you - growing your own flowers is no walk in the park. It can be hard work!! From battling pests, deer, rabbits, slugs, weeds to dealing with the good old British (or should I say Scottish?) weather, there's never a dull moment. But it's so worth it. Because when those flowers finally bloom, there's nothing quite like it.
My growing season is April to October so if you buy flowers from me within those months you're pretty much guaranteed to have at least some locally grown flowers in your arrangement, if not all.
Thank you for joining me on this journey, I can't wait to share more with you in the future!
